方位詞 ，是表示方向或位置的詞，分單純詞的和合成的兩類。單純的方位詞是「上、下、前、後、左、右、東、西、南、北、里、外、中、內、旁」。

簡介

合成的方位詞由單純詞以下列方式構成：

（a）前邊加「以」或「之」。如，以上（Above）、之下（Under）。

（b）後邊加「邊」、「面」、「頭」。如：前邊、左面，里頭。

（c）對舉。如，上下、前後、里外。

（d）其他。如，底下、頭里、當中。

在古代，方位詞也用另外一種表示，即：

青龍的方位是東，代表春季；

朱雀的方位是南，代表夏季；

白虎的方位是西，代表秋季；

玄武的方位是北，代表冬季。

in the east表示我們生活中和地理位置上的絕對方向。
如：
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

on the east表示某事物位於另一事物所朝的方向。這里的方向是相對而言的。
如：
China faces the Pacific on the east.
中國東臨太平洋。
in (to，on，at) the east of

1．要表示A在B的東部，即：A在B的范圍之內時就用"A is in the east of B"，
如：
Japan is in the east of Asia.日本在亞洲東部。

Italy is in the south of Europe.義大利在歐洲南部。

2．如果A在B的東方，即：A在B的范圍之外，且相隔有一定的距離，就用"A lies to the east of B".口語中有時可將to the省去。
如：
Japan lies (to the) east of China.日本位於中國東方。

France lies (to the) east of England.法國位於英國東方。

3．如果A在B的東邊(側)，即：A與B相鄰接。就用"A is on the east of B".
如：
Guangdong is on the south of Hunan.廣東在湖南南邊。

Shangdong is on the north of Jiangsu.山東在江蘇北邊。

4．如果把方位詞當作一個整體看，或是看成一點，就用"A is at the east of B"
如:
There was a big battle at the north of the Liaodong Peninsula.

在遼東半島的北邊有一場大戰。

5．如果要表示「A位於B東面100公里處」時我們既可以說"A lies l00km to the east of B"，也可以說"A lies 100km east of B". 後者在美國口語中更為常見。
如：
The plane crashed 30 miles south of the city.飛機在離城南30英里處墜毀。

Suzhou lies 50 miles to the west of Shanghai.蘇州位於上海西面50英里處。
