我到家已臨近午夜，進門後按亮廳里的燈，立刻感覺到不對勁兒，難道……我快步走到各處，一一按亮燈，到衛生間一仰頭，心就猛地往下一沉——浴盆上面那扇透氣窗被撬開了！這時，忽然聽見卧室床下有動靜。我左手從衣兜掏出手機，准備撥110報警，右手操起窗簾叉子，朝床下喊：「出來！放下手裡的東西！只要你不傷人，咱們好商量！」
一個瘦小的少年從床底下爬出來了，剃著光頭，穿一件黑底子的T恤。我用窗簾叉指著他：「你偷了些什麼？把東西掏出來！」
（1）他把兩手伸進褲兜，麻利地將兜翻掏出來，又把手攤開說：「啥也沒拿啊！」
他那一副「久經沙場」、處變不驚的模樣，倒弄得我哭笑不得。我命令他跟我來到門廳里，開始詢問。
他今年14歲，家在離我們這個城市很遠的地方。他只上到小學三年級就輟學了，一年前開始了流浪生活，現在靠結伙偷竊為生。
我望著這個瘦骨嶙峋、滿臉大汗的少年，問他：「餓吧？」他眯眼看我，彷彿我是個怪物。我為他泡了一碗方便麵，端到他面前。
我決心放他去，對他說：「我的話你未必肯聽，但是我還是要跟你說，不要再干這種違法的事，你應該走正路。」他點頭。
我給他開門時，他居然說：「我還不想走。」
我大吃一驚：「為什麼？」
他回答的聲音很小，我聽來卻像一聲驚雷：「我爸在床底下呢……」
天哪！原來還有個大活人在卧室床底下。我慌忙將窗簾叉搶到手裡，准備撥110。這工夫，那少年卻已經轉身進了卧室，麻利地爬進了床底下。我驚魂未定，他卻又爬了出來，回到了門廳。我這才看清，他手裡捧著一幅油畫。我正想嚷，他對我說：（2）「我要……我要我爸……求您了。」
那幅油畫，是我臨摹凡·高的自畫像，這幅自畫像里，人物顯得特別憔悴，眼神飽含憂郁，鬍子拉碴的。
少年告訴我，他負責踩點的時候，從我家窗外隔著鐵柵看見了這幅畫，一看就覺得是他爸，總想偷走它。今天，他好不容易鑽了進來，取下這幅畫，偏巧我回來了……
我細問他：「你爸現在在哪兒呢？你媽媽呢？」
他執拗地告訴我，他沒有媽。他媽在他還不記事的時候，嫌他爸窮，跟別人跑了。他記得他爸，那扎人的鬍子茬兒，那熏鼻子的汗味加煙味加酒味……不記得是哪一天，忽然說他們那村外地底下有黑金子，大家就挖了起來，他爸爸也去挖。去年一天半夜裡，村子忽然鬧嚷起來，跟著有嗚哇嗚哇的汽車警笛聲，他揉著眼睛出了屋……簡單地說，村外的小煤窯出事故了，他爸，還有別的許多孩子的爸，給埋井底下了……
少年說這些事情的時候，眼裡沒有一點淚光。我聽這孩子講他爸遇難，也就是鼻子酸了酸，但是，當我聽清這孩子今天鑽進我的屋子，為的只是偷這幅他自以為是他父親的畫像時，我的眼淚忍不住溢出了眼角。
我把畫送給了他。他也不懂得道謝。我把門打開，他閃了出去。
關上門以後，我若有所失，又出門一溜煙跑下樓梯，氣喘吁吁地沖出樓門，四面張望。
只有樹影在月光下朦朧地閃動，一派寂靜籠罩著我。
——我是想追上去叮囑他：「孩子，你以後可以來按我的門鈴，從正門進來！」
